After 25 years, UPEI gives nursing program a new name and status Aerial view of the University of Prince Edward Island campus. CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - The UPEI School of Nursing will now be known as the UPEI Faculty of Nursing. The university’s senate and board of governors elevated the status of the school, effective immediately. In celebration of its 25-year history, the faculty will be holding a reception and gala dinner on June 29. Faculty members were strongly in favour of the status change when proposing it to the university’s governing bodies. They cited the expansion of the nursing programs, in particular graduate studies and curriculum grounded in the philosophy of primary health care and research as reasons for the change. With annual enrolment exceeding 300 students, the faculty is now home to 45 professionals, including tenure-track faculty, adjunct graduate faculty, clinical and sessional instructors, co-ordinators and administrative assistants. Robert Gilmour, vice-president of academic and research, said over the past five years, the faculty has garnered more than $15 million in research funding.
